A see-through image is layered on my desktop and shows through on all apps and docs that are placed over it. How do I delete it

Can you provide a screenshot of this? I'm not sure what you're dealing with per the description.

Thank you for such a quick rsponse. Meanwhile, I shut down and rebooted and it is gone, so the problem appears to have resolved itself.

Did this image appear when you were at the login screen or at the desktop waking from sleep and waiting for a password? If so that sounds like the way the screen looks under Yosemite.

I was mostly curious for the benefit of future readers who might experience the same thing.

The image appeared after I inserted the picture into a document and then deleted. It was like a ghost image, that is, not as crisp as the picture I had inserted, and it could be seen through. And it was static in place on the desktop. Fortunately, it's gone now.
