removing "macintosh HD" icon from desktop?

is it possible? i dont want to just hit delete and screw anything up?

ps. first post on these forums

go to finder/preferences/general and under that it says "show these items on the desktop" uncheck hard disks, but then i dont think it will show any hard drives, like if you connect to a drive through a network it wont appear on the desktop. k
