Cannon MP500 printer works but scanner doesn't?

OK so I bought the Cannon MP500, and it prints fine, but when I go to use the scanner it won't communnicate. So I know what your thinking turn it off reset spin backwards trust me I did it all. And yes I reinstalled everything, I believe it's the driver maybe the one it came with just doesnt work . so i went and downloaded a driver for it but when I download the MP500 Driver it says Mounting failed? So Im lost has anyone had this problem?

I have Safari 1.3.2, and Mac os 10.3.9 on a Powerbook G4
