My 7 year old iMac displays a square black message box with white print upon start up. The message is in several languages and tells me to press the on button to restart the machine. This message appears every time the machine reboots and nothing else will work.

That's called a kernel panic. Did you happen to install any new ram recently?

No - but I do use a WD My Passport as a backup for i-Tunes, all my CD's are on it but before the black message appeared I could not access any tunes as it said it could not not find them ?

That 7 year old iMac should have some install disks that will include AHT (Apple Hardware Test) that you should be able to boot from and do some checking and diagnostics to maybe see what's wrong.

Or even just try booting up using Safe Boot Mode and see it things work. (Press and hold the shift key only when you hear the startup chime from a cold boot and until you see there spinning gear. Then login...
