It's memory problem. See Apple Beep codes here.

Have you installed new memory modules recently?

All is well thanks for your input. I found that I had a problem with the top (memory) slot. I tried both memory modules in both slots and neither would work in the top slot (both work in the bottom). In each failing case the beep code was indeed 3-3-2. The fix it seems was to reset the NVRAM, now both slots are working. It occurs to me that I was having an issue with my sound just before the memory failure (if that can be related). This has happened before when I plug in my ear buds, the speakers continue to work. Resetting the NVRAM also seems to cure this.
