The keyboard backlight went out. I have tried the fn f5 and f6 and it doesn't do anything. How can I turn the backlight back on?

Try a SMC reset. If that doesn't work, make an appointment with Apple to have it looked at.

I went through the process and got the backlight back. However, it comes & goes. I will take it to a Mac store if it continues. thanks for the help.

However, it comes & goes.

If this is the case…maybe there's a loose connection somewhere…or a faulty cable.

My thoughts also. Sometimes it reacts to moving the screen.
