My MacBook automatically updated to Photo for IOS last week, and iPhoto has disappeared. My camera's set to store both RAW and JPG versions of each shot. iPhoto uploaded both with no problem at all. Photo is just uploading the JPG, and I can't see how to fix this? The upload is also very slow to start, and today I had to close the software down & restart 3 times to get my photos to upload at all. This is a disaster for me. Anyone else found this problem & a fix? I'm regretting my move to Macs. Seems to me all Apple care about at the mo is promoting their **** watch.

iPhoto did not disappear. It is still there in your Applications folder the same place it has always been. It is also still functioning with no need at this time to move to the new "Photos" app if you don't want to.

unfortunately, that's not the case for me - I already tried that! In the Apps folder, the iPhoto icon has the barred circle over it, and if I click on it, I get a message saying 'in order to use iPhoto you must upgrade to the latest version in Apps store' When I then follow the link to Apps store, I get a message saying 'unfortunately, this is not available in the UK at this time'. That's why I posted the question - if I could just get back to iPhoto, I'd be happy, but I can't! It's extremely important for me to be able to upload my photos regularly. I'd hate to go back to PCs, since I've been such an apostle for Macs for the past four years since I made the change, but if Apple's going to play silly games (like getting rid of an app that worked fine, and making it inaccessible to UK users), then I may have to rethink.

Let's start with some basic questions that might get us closer to an answer. Here are a few for starters:

1. What are your Macs specs and which version of the OS are you running? Include any recent changes or upgrades that were made.
2. Which version of iPhoto were you running? If it's still on your drive you can single click the icon then press command i simultaneously. In the window that appears you should see the version of iPhoto.

It's a MacBook Pro, running OSX Yosemite 10.10.3, processor 2.6 Gh, mem 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 (BTW - the OS also went through an automatic update last week)

iPhoto was version 9.6

Check your Applications folder and look for iPhoto. It should still be there.

I am not sure about your issue with Photos, but iPhoto should still be there to use until you figure that out.

Unfortunately, as described above, I can't access iPhoto. I'm not sure if this is an issue affecting only UK users for some reason, but the message I'm getting when I try the App store link implies that. This is the message: "The item you've requested is not currently available in the UK Store." Seems like blatant discrimination. I live almost 100 miles away from an Apple store, so not exactly easy to pop in.

Are you sure it's not in your Applications folder? Most people I have talked to say iPhoto is still in Applications after the update to 10.10.3.

And here's another thread I discovered in a forum, so I'm not the only person who's been jinxed by an inappropriate upgrade:
After trying Photos, I found too many missing features, so tried to go back to iPhoto, only to discover I couldn't!

I've also searched for the Photo 9.6.1 update, but it seems to have been removed from the App Store. I've made an appointment to talk with Apple tomorrow to ask them what's going on.

I found you can still run iPhoto by opening the package contents with Control-click on the App, then click on Show Package Contents, Contents, MacOS, iPhoto. But I don't know how stable this is. It seems to run just fine. But I'd like the 9.6.1 update just to be sure it's not going to trash my photos.

Yes, it's in the Apps folder, as I said above - but it has a symbol over it like the no-entry sign - i.e. a circle with diagonal line through it.
If I try to open it, I get an error message saying it can't be used until I upgrade to latest version. There's an App store link, which produces the error message that it's not available in the UK store. I have, of course, tried searching from scratch in the App store, but iPhoto itself is no longer listed. BTW - I have always been very careful to upload upgrades as I'm alerted to them, so I have no idea why I missed out on the latest iPhoto upgrade. As far as I'm concerned, Apple has caused me a mega-problem, in that I daren't clear my camera's SD card, as Photo isn't uploading the RAW versions, so I have to find an answer within the next day or two. I'm sad to say, the best answer seems to be a PC at less than £500 rather than another Mac at almost £2000. I am very, very disillusioned

There is a thread on the Apple support site featuring users with a similar problem. Have you tried this solution on the top go page 2?

I had a very similar problem, but my grayed out button said UPDATE (not INSTALL). I clicked it and it did nothing. Then I read Terence Devlin's suggestion, dragged my existing iPhoto application to the trash, then the UPDATE button worked, re-installed iPhoto, and it's working fine now. Have you dragged your existing iPhoto to the trash yet? I would try that. Hope it works for you.

Slydude, I'm not sure how I can reinstall iPhoto, since I don't seem to be able to access it anywhere - I suspect this is a problem unique to UK users, because of the Appstore message to that effect. I find this completely bizarre. When I go into the 'purchases' folder, iPhoto update is greyed out.

Slydude, you are an absolute star! I was wary of moving iPhoto to trash just in case I lost my photo files (I have them backed up, but even so, it's hassle!), but I did it, and then found that the Purchased Apps folder was showing 'Install', rather than greyed-out Update, so I've reinstalled (it took ages!), and my RAW files are now uploaded. Many, many thanks for the advice, you have saved my sanity. What I can't understand is why Apple have replaced what was a brilliant App with a totally crappy one - I'm a bit worried about what'll happen when they finally pull the plug on iPhoto altogether. If anyone on this forum has influence with Apple, ask them to PLEASE make Photo fit for purpose if they intend to make that the flagship photo upload program! It doesn't even seem to recognise my camera's attached, which is a worry for anyone who's a keen photographer!

Glad that sorted things out for you. After your earlier post I had intended to suggest simply moving the old iPhoto to a different location just in case you needed to put it back again.

Not to hijack this thread but what is it that you find missing in Photos. I am by no means a photographer and have only messed with it a bit but it seems like the location of some features are not obvious at first.

Hi Slydude, My main problems with Photo were: (1) it didn't seem to recognise at first that my camera was attached via USB - have never had to do anything to prompt iPhoto re this, it needed a few unplug & replug attempts with Photo (2) more serious from my PoV - I store both a RAW and JPG version of all pics on my SD card, and whereas iPhoto routinely uploaded both versions, Photo only uploaded the JPG versions. Although I spent a considerable time fiddling around with the menus within Photo, I couldn't see any way to tell it to upload both. I don't use iPhoto to process my photos, just to upload them (and, quite often, to share them via email & Twitter & FB). I use a specialist program for any processing. I suspect that Photo is optimised for people who are only using Apple products such as iPhone to take photos, and while I often use my iPhone camera, the vast majority of my pics are via a camera. I hope this is not a sign of things to come, because it will be a VERY long time before I decide I want an Apple Watch more than I want a hole in the head. Don't know how things are in the USA, but the Apple stores here are fixated on promoting the **** watch, to the exclusion of all else, it seems!

I believe this issue has been solved in another post but just in case it was missed I believe the answer turned out to be, delete iPhoto and then reload it from previous purchases in the App Store, the version you reload will be the new 9.6.1.
