My new windows and finder have no navigation column

When I Apple N or Apple F, the window that pops up is devoid of the left hand navigation bar. It's blank. I fixed permissions. Shut down and restarted. No change.

Anyone seen this? Any ideas?

… and if the Sidebar is there with nothing in it, tailor it to your requirements with Finder -> Preferences -> Sidebar
