External hard drive for photos

I would like to keep all my photos on a external hard drive and be able to view them on an imac and windows 7 laptop. Is this possible

Yes it's possible. Keep in mind that the external hard drive will have to be formatted so that it can be read and written to by both OS X and Windows. Without using any special drivers, if you format the external drive to FAT-32 or exFAT it will be compatible to both your Windows machine and Mac.
