Word 2011 Status Bar Not Displaying Properly

Your Mac's Specs
MacBook Pro (13-inch, purchased 2008). 4GB RAM. 300GB HD. 2.3 GHz, Core i5. OSX Yosemite.
The status bar on the bottom is not showing the correct information. It's mostly blank with the word count at zero (0). But, when you click on it, it shows the correct figures. How can I make the status bar display information correctly?
