Have to update Safari, 5.1.10 on a mid 2009 MacBook Pro Model 5.5 now using Apples Snow Leopard at 10.6.3 Do not want to buy Apple's newer programs like Yosemite. Which web browser is safest and updates continually? FireFox, Moxilia?

Just use your Snow Leopard Software Update and expand the window for what's available, and uncheck those you don't want, but you're already waaaay behind on your SL software and probably several Security Updates and you should end up with SL 10.6.8 and it's latest compatible version of Safari.

Just tell Yosemite and any associated updates to buzz off by unchecking them in the expanded window. They won't show if you don't expand the window to "show details"!!!

And BTW: we prefer Safari as our main browser. Other's may have their own opinion. ;)

Hello - first, the Yosemite OS X is a free download; of course, you might need to upgrade your other software at a cost? You may want to give us some more information on your computer, especially the amount of RAM - your laptop is 'on the fence' for upgrading to 10.10.x (see quote below from HERE) - although 2 GB of RAM is stated to be minimal, 4 GB should be available if not 8 GB - I've only used Safari on my Macs (current version of the browser is 8.x) - might want to look @ Chrome also - Dave :)

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)

Maybe I misreads the post, but not sure if the OP is already at and using Safari 5.1.10 (released Sept 12, 2013) or needs to upgrade to a later version.

If the latter, I'd suggest spending the $20.00 and buy ML 10.8.x from Apple at the most, and addition RAM as well if needed. Even SL could probably use more. ;)

Safari versions are generally tied to operating systems. For example currently version 8.0.4 on Yosemite. You might be interested in giving Firefox a go. Be aware OS X.6 is no longer supported by Apple with Security or General Updates.

Actually, Apple is still supplying updated XProtect files for SL 10.6.8, and I wonder at times, just what SL users really need extra protection from. Just a thought to consider… hmmm???… ;)

PM-R I also wonder about the advised security updates. Considering Apple appears to be encouraging us all to encrypt our HD's with File Vault what have we to fear anyway?;)

@Macowner2

Web browsers are personal in most cases and it's really a question of trying others such as Firefox and Chrome to see where they fit within your comfort zone.

One thing I would say is: do keep a second web browser on your Mac (and keep it up to date) even if you rarely use it. Reason: suppose Safari gets corrupted or fails for whatever reason, you have no access to the internet to seek solutions (from Mac Forums, for example!) or to Google your problem. You can imagine how impotent you would feel being excluded from the internet. Can't download another browser then. So my advice is keep a second browser on your Mac for such an emergency.

I find that the last available Safari for Snow Leopard is a dog. I use Firefox with much better performance.

I switched to Chrome at the same time for exactly the same reasons, mind you Chrome was a lightweight browser at that time.

In my opinion, Firefox wins hands-down. It's more customizable than Safari and not tied to an operating system. Did you mean "Mozilla"? They are the Firefox folks.

That's so subjective, nobody but you can know the answer. Add Opera and Chrome into the mix and try all of them. The best one will be the one YOU like best.

The question is subjective, but I've been a fan of Firefox since Firebird and the Netscape days and they are really competing right now. Its a good piece of software.

+1!!!

And thanks to the fact that we have a choice and one of them will be just the opinion of the user rather than any actual fact. ;)

And even Microsoft is catching on to that (although it's taken them over 20 years) by including "Spartan" a new web browser with Windows 10. ;P
