Yosemite contains Pages, which is free, and a good word processor that can also deal with MS Office/Word files.

You could always use Office which might very well work for you.

How "heavy" do you use the suite elements? Word, Excel, Powerpoint? A free suite that works at about 90% compatibility for medium heavy formatted documents (legal) is Libre Office or Open Office aka NeoOffice. It is more compatible than Pages, Numbers and Keynote.

Not sure about the latest versions of Office, but there have historically been small incompatibilities between OSX and Windows on Word documents, something like 95% compatible, kind of like .docx and .doc on windows.

If you just do letters and memos, Pages is probably fine. Cant comment on Numbers vs. Excel because I'm not a power user.

Dont see too many people actually collaborating on .ppt files and Keynote is very user friendly, so it may be a perfect substitute.

For the best result use the best suite - Office 2011. If you can wait a few months a new version, Office 2016 is on the way. Some of us are using the beta version and it appears great.

@yobneb:

Take Harry's advice. If you're used to working with MS Office on a PC, you'll have no problem with using MS Office on your Mac. None of the other office suites or the free Pages offers the same compatibility. Like Harry I'm currently testing the free MS Office 2016 suite and so far it's solid. MS will be releasing Office 2016 later this year. In the meantime, you can subscribe to Office 365, either the personal or standard version.
