I am trying to connect my ASUS monitor to my MacbookPro 8,2 late 2011 via a Thunderbolt to HDMI cable. The computer sees the monitor but not vis a versa.

Welcome to Mac-Forums.

What does that mean? Does the monitor not show what the Macbook Pro is outputting? Does it go into power-save mode?

And to add. Is the external ASUS monitor powered on?

Checco, I have no idea how to do that.

Many external monitors have their own separate settings menu that are accessed via the buttons on the monitor. Access these settings…and select the port that the video cable is attached to.

Which specific Asus monitor is this? Based on that we can tell you what to choose. If the back of the monitor shows a separate DVI and HDMI input, then you need to choose the correct one.

A lot of times your output of HDMI from the computer will go into the DVI port since HDMI is just DVI + Audio..
