I had my nephew back up my MacBook Pro before I had it wiped clean due to some malware. When I went to get my 5000 photos back they were not on the external drive. Anyone know if I lost them forever or if there might be somewhere on that drive?

It depends on how your nephew "backed up" the computer before it got wiped. Do you know what program he used? And what steps are you following to reload your photos?
