Macbook 4.1 memory upgrade?

Two memory slots. Do both slots have to have identical SO-DIMMs? Or can I get 3GB total by putting a 1GB in one and a 2GB in the other slot?

The ram sticks do not have to be matching...and yes you should be able to get 3gig with 2gig + 1gig sticks. If the sticks were matching...I think that you get slightly improved performance...but probably not noticeable.

4gig (2 x 2gig) would be better. That's what I run in my MacBook 4,1. But maybe this ram is just "laying around"...so maybe this ram upgrade is basically free.

Thanks. Yes, the 1+2GB was a hypothetical. In fact, right now it's got 0.5+0.5, which is really pretty weak. 2+2 seems like the right way to go.

MacBook 4.1 can handle 6GB of memory, so you could use 1 x 4GB amd 1 x 2GB. 2+2 will be a great improvement over 1GB.

That "which is really pretty weak" part has to be one big understatement.

Yes, that's a fair statement. I'm now running 10.6, which Apple says needs at least 1GB. When I look at the Activity Monitor, with just a browser open and running, the memory activity is bouncing right up to 1GB. And the performance on the whole is really sub-par. I just inherited this machine, but I've got my memory order in already.
