My wifes 2009 PB, OS 10.6.8 froze today. When she tried to restart she got Apples "prohibitory sign". I got it to boot in safe mode and when asked to enter the password she told me she did not have one and had never seen the password request box. I did not know that that step could be bypassed. Anyone tell me why?

You don't have to set a login password. I don't set one until I have the machine setup and all app installs done. If you leave it blank it won't ask for one. If there is no password and only one user account it will just boot to the desktop.

As for what the password is, I suggest trying the apple id password or icloud password. I always set up two admin accounts just incase one becomes corrupt.
