iMac won't start up

My iMac is showing the swirling circle and won't start up, just a clear screen. Making noises of start up and fan but that's it, tried control P R but a circle with a line in it came on any ideas??

Many more details are needed here. Which exact model iMac? What version OS X? Do you have an install DVD to try booting from instead?
