OSX has been running real slow on my student macs that only have 2 RAM. I suspect a lot of programs are running in the background. Can anyone tell me how I can see this info and quit programs?

You didn't mention which Macs your students are using and what version of OS X but 2 GB of memory is not much memory even for some older Macs. You can see what's running in the background by opening: Applications, Utilities, Activity Monitor.app. You should also be able to see what apps are open by checking the Dock.

Not visible in doc. Everything seems closed. Saw how to open activity monitor but just saw a bunch of weird text. Running OSX. Isn't that Yosemite?

Think it's time to call your IT dept. and let them check it out.

Activity Monitor can be daunting. Try pressing command and tab simultaneously. The icons for any running programs will appear on screen. Continue holding down the command key while pressing tab. This will cycle through icons representing the open programs.

When you reach a program you want to close release the command and tab keys. Pressing Command and Q simultaneously will quit that program. You can repeat this process for any open programs quitting them as needed.

That sounds do-able. I will try it! Thanks.

Hi usingmac,

No. OS X is generic and there are many versions of it, the latest being Yosemite (10.10.x).

Click on the Apple icon, top left on menu bar. A drop down will appear . Click on "About this Mac". It will tell you what system you are running.
