My router status shows the iMac connected via LAN and Wifi. Can this cause confusion at the router or ISP or does the iMac only use the best connection? I have turned off the iMac Wifi just in case.....Running Mavericks 10.10.2 on a late 2012 iMac.

OS X will use whichever you choose to set as primary in Network Prefs. In Network prefs, you can drag the various choices (left side of the pref pane) into the order of priority you want. Mine has ethernet first, WiFi second, the rest below.
