Since I purchased my MacBook Air back in April, I've been using a Seagate External HDD to back up with Time Machine. The drive has been rock solid, and I haven't had ANY problems with it.

However, just today - the drive has started randomly unmounting. After ~5 minutes of being plugged in, it just decides to quit.

Oddly enough, the power light on the drive stays on after it's done unmounting itself. This doesn't usually happen when I unmount the drive manually.

It's also worth mentioning that I've tried repairing the disk/permissions with Disk Utility, but the disk conviently unmounts itself before the process is completed. Is there any way to fix this, or is the drive just defective? Thanks.

Dead Seagate.

Sorry to hear that.

Seagate hard drives are known for failures and big one's when they go they usually corrupt the main board on the seagate box goes dead or auto mounts and unmounts.

pretty much time for a new hard drive.

The drive is defective; contact Seagate and ask for a RMA. It should be warranted for three years during which time they will replace it.

While it could be a drive or enclosure issue, the couple of drives I've had do this, it was a cable issue.
(None of mine have been Seagates.)

Like chscag says, if you haven't got a spare cable lying around to test it, give Seagate a holler.

(Don't suggest to them that you have any indication as to the remedy except replacement.)
