My question is : Can I replace the existing internal hard drive with any 3.5 inch Sata drive? Will any such drive fit into my iMac without any modifications?

Yes. Just about any common 3.5" SATA HD will fit.

iMac hard drive

Thanks for answering. I have not done this before and wanted to be sure that I had the right drive!

And from memory, the capacity is limited to 500GB, except for the 2GHz model which is limited to 250GB, unless you have the 2.4GHz version which can handle 750GB.
