Hi all,

My macbook air 13'' from 2012 (10.8.5 OS) has started to not wake properly from sleep this has been happening for a while, when i lift the lid it shows me the windows i had open but the cursor doesn't move and all i can do is reboot to get out of it. If i close the lid the screen stays on as the apple symbol on the back is still lit. For some reason i believe this to be a software rather than hardware issue but could be wrong.

I did manage to get around this by disabling standby (0) in the terminal using pmset. My understanding is that disabling standby means kernel power management doesn't hibernate the machine however having it disabled wastes more battery power and the drain is noticeable in my experience.

I've seen posts where people have mentioned something similar for mavericks. Has anyone had this issue and resolved it? Does upgrading to yosemite fix it? I'm not that keen on upgrading as my mac is a few years old already and been fairly happy with mountain lion.

Thanks,

Matt

Boot your MacBook Air to the recovery partition (command + r) and use Disk Utility from the main menu to run a verify on the SSD. Let us know the results of that test. The symptoms you described could indicate SSD problems. One other thing... make sure you have a current backup of everything.

Thanks for that i booted in recovery mode-i didn't know this feature had been added to the OS, handy.
Disk utility did find some disk errors so had to repair the disk. Will see how it behaves over the next few weeks.

Thanks again.

Go back and check the SSD again as you did before. If it shows errors, it's time to replace it. SSDs are no different than spinning hard drives in that once they begin to develop errors, they can no longer be trusted and should be replaced. And my original advice about making a backup goes... do it now before it's too late.

Thanks chscag, yes i've got time machine backups so i'm covered there. The first thing tried after the crash happened again was to run disk utility again and it claims the disk is ok..

OK, sounds good. How about posting the crash log for us to look at. Maybe we can spot something.

Hi,

Sorry took me a while to get around to doing this. I don't get any error messages the screen is just frozen with all the windows i had open before sleeping. What i have noticed is that the time reported by the clock in this frozen state is later than when i put the mac to sleep.
Below is the last lines of the log when in sleep mode and then presumably hibernate. The log indicates that the mac wakes every so often after i close the lid, maybe this is normal. Even though wake for network access and power nap are off.

Anything weird in this lot, the console doesn't report anything when i lift the lid, only the hard reboot:

Power management board is dying.

Replace the power connector board on the macbook it's causing the issue.

What happens:

When the power regulator board starts to go out you place the machine in standby and the machine doesn't awake properly this is because the macbook is not receiving enough voltage to re-power the system board functions like networking audio and firewire/thunderbolt Etc.

This is why you received this error:

Feb 11 20:57:06 kernel[0]: AirPort: Link Down on en0. Reason 8 (Disassociated because station leaving).

And even this error message:

Feb 11 22:07:07 kernel[0]: AirPort_Brcm43xx::powerChange: System Wake - Full Wake/ Dark Wake / Maintenance wake
Feb 11 22:07:07 kernel[0]: Previous Sleep Cause: 5

This is caused when the machine cannot restore a service because of low voltage.

This is not a bad thing because there are 2 solutions to it.

1. Take it into apple have them run a hardware diagnostic program on it you will know if it's the power management board when the apple hardware diagnostic fails on the bluetooth and the airport due to the fact the machine can't power both at the same time.

2. Purchase a new power supply it could be just as simple as your power adapter itself going out.
