I have a brand new and older WD external drive for my TM backups. They seem to take forever in the "preparing backups" stage. I also have an older one for CCC thats runs fine. Any ideas?

PS: I'm running the most current Yosemite.

Try running Disk Utility on the WD external drive to see if there are any errors (if you have not already done so). Correct any errors if found and start the backup again. If there are no disk errors and it continues to hangup on "preparing backup", you may have to retire that drive and start the backups on a new drive. Retain the drive though in case you need to restore from any of your older backups.

I ran disk utility and repaired. Seems to run smoothly now. Thank you.
