Finder Sidebar

Suddenly I don't have Applications listed in my Finder Sidebar. It just looks like a folder and I can't move it over to the sidebar.

Finder, Preferences, Sidebar. Place a check in the box that says "Applications".

I did that but my checks don't stay in the boxes. Nothing happens.

This is starting to sound as though the real problem is one of maintenance. Specifically, I don't think you've done any in a while. i'd suggest repairing permissions, or using OnyX, and restarting.
