Time Machine doesn't remind me to backup (it did before Yosemite). Also TM icon doesn't revolve during backup - perhaps related? I don't keep an external drive permanently connected to my iMac but wait to be reminded by TM.

Time Machine backups are automatic, you don't have to do it manually. As long as the disk used for the TM backups is available, it will do it on the hour, every hour..

If you don't keep the Time Machine drive attached to your iMac and it was reminding you to backup before, then you must have had that set in "reminders". You can do the same in Yosemite by using your reminders.app. The Time Machine icon no longer spins in Yosemite but if you look at it closely, you'll see the two arrows coming together instead of just one arrow. I liked the spinning icon better. ;)
