This issue extends to simple web browsing as well - DNS lookups, as with all browsers, happen all day. I've seen Safari fail a few times and quick refresh will "fix" it. I'm curious to know why Apple re-wrote the underlying DNS features of OS X. What was wrong with mDNSResponder?

What was wrong with mDNSResponder? Not one single thing. That is what is bugging me.

I am aware of DNS on the WEB but so far I had not had any issues there and some of those names in the article looked like network share names, so I figured I would try that route.

Like Bryan, I have had occasional problems with Safari refusing to open a page and then displaying a message to that effect. A refresh or re-try usually resolves it. I have no idea why Apple abandoned mDNSResponder unless it was for a security reason that they're remaining secretive about. I don't think it's a good idea to try to restore it as the author of that article suggests. For one, you may screw up your system and secondly, as soon as 10.10.2 is released you'll be right back to where you were before.

chscag, agreed on the not trying to revert back to mDNSResponder. Just was sharing the article as it makes no sense what they are doing, plus wanted to warn people in case they run into DNS issues.

In Mavericks they got rid of OSX's video engine breaking and locking out every Video codec but their own and went with the IOS Video Engine. Now this. I wonder if this new DNS is from IOS?
