If it's new it should last a long time, the problem is that the battery life decreases quickly.

In my view that's due to people not using their battery's properly, they have a memory of how much they get charged, if you only charge it a small amount that will soon become how much charge the battery will take.

The best way to avoid it is to run the iPod down till it's completely flat then charge fully.

If your iPod is really new you should have charged it fully to start with, if you didn't the battery life will be short!

New iPods need to go through a full-charge full discharge cycle four or five times. Once that has been done you should see full capacity/play time on the battery. The battery charge level icon is notoriously inaccurate. Trust it the same way you trust a groundhog's weather forecast on Feb. 2nd.

the only problem with running the ipod down completely is that it starts charging everytime you plug it in to update it.
