I have an iMac G5 running osx 10.6.8. A program we have had to buy new each year as it is upgraded no longer works with 10,6. it now requires 10.7.

questions.....

Can my computer upgrade to 10.7
Is there some way I can use a program that requires 10.7 with my 10.6 computer

I have no desire to buy a new computer just to use this program

Any suggestions are appreciated

Thanks

We need to know exactly which iMac you have and which OS version before we can answer this question. It can't be an iMac G5 running 10.6.8 since no G5 can run that. It might also help to know either which program requires the update or the minimum system requirements.

To find out the information we need go to the Apple menu in the upper left of the screen. The first screen that appears will have the information.

Like Slydude mentioned. No iMac G5 can run OS 10.6.8. Maybe you meant 10.5.8 (which it can run). If it actually is an iMac G5 running OS 10.5.8...it cannot run OS 10.7.

We need to know the exact model iMac you have to be sure.:)

MUCH different than an iMac G5...thanks for updating.:)

As to your original question. Yes it can run OS 10.7. In fact...it can run all the way up to the most current OS...which is OS 10.10 Yosemite.

Thanks, that's good to know but it raises another question.

All of the programs I regularly use are older versions. How far can I upgrads the operating system before having to replace the programs? These are the ones I use on a regular basis

Word 2004 Ver 11.5.3
Epson Scan V 100A
Quicken 2004 Ver 13.0.2 R3
Mail Ver 4.6
Safari 5.1.10
Chrome 39.0.2171.95
Photoshop Elements 6
iCal 4.0.4
iTunes 11.4
iMovie 6.0.3
Plus two older HP printers

You need to look up each of those apps (one by one) to see what OS versions they are compatible with. A good place to start is the website "roaring apps.com".

In short Word 2004 will not run on anything later than OS X.6.8 - no Rosetta anymore.
Mail and Safari will be updated to the current version of a later OS, OS X.10 these are Mail version 8.1 and Safari version 8.0.2. Older versions will not run.
iTunes will update to version 12.

As for the others, trial and error.
