Is the 5k model worth the extra $500 for the better image or not?

How can we possibly answer that? Wouldn't that be up to you and what you are intended to use it for?

All I can tell you is this: you cannot even buy a 5K HDTV for less than this entire computer costs. It's like getting the Mac for free.

My best suggestion would be to go to a store and take a look at the 5K versus the non-Retina iMac and you be the judge. From strictly a "value of equipment" point of view, yes the 5K is worth the extra $500. From a "will I take advantage of that" point of view, probably not unless you're a pro photographer or video editor.

The display of the 5k is really good - no doubt about it. But...

Sitting next to my thunderbolt monitor it is not that much better. On the other hand, it makes my Samsung 27" look like a relic from DOS days.

The comparisons really speak to the high quality if the normal TB display, rather than the super Rez of the 5k.

The regular iMac would be more than fine for most users, including me.
