When I use the Command - R function, my mac presents a grey screen with a lock in the center and a space to enter a password - presumably the admin/root password. When the admin password is entered nothing happens.

We need more info about your Mac: Year and model? Version of OS X? In the meantime it sounds like you're being confronted with a firmware password. Where did you get this Mac from?

Thanks for the specs about your MacBook Pro. However, it still appears that a firmware password has been set. Is this machine one which you just purchased used?
