Buy a plug in adapter - something like this.

Need to read reviews yourself to find one that will work with OS X.

I want to upgrade my bluetooth 2.1 on my imac mid 2011 by bluetooth 4.0.

Why? If it's to enable features like Handoff in Yosemite, that won't work over a USB dongle. I did some reading and a number of people are reporting in other forums that they have been successful in getting Handoff to work on 2011 MacBooks by replacing the Bluetooth card internally and modifying a system kext file. Here's one post explaining what was done:

Here's a more comprehensive discussion on the matter.

If your are running Yosemite Bluetooth version is 4.3.1f2 on that model iMac. What operating system are you actually using? May be time to upgrade.
