1. Connect optical audio cord from optical audio out on back of TV to Sony surround sound system.
2. You're done.

If the Sony surround has HDMI switching built in (most systems today do have this feature), connect the HDMI cable from the ATV to the surround.

I have a Mac, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, ATV, Roku, Sat recevier, & PS all connected to my surround which handles all the switching duties and a single cable to the TV.

How old is this Sony system? Where did you get "278" from? That is not the entire model # if it's been purchased in the last 8-10 years.

????

There are too many variables to provide a correct answer without knowing either:
a) the type of connections available on both the SS and the TV
b) the model number of the SS and TV with the manufacturer having an online owner's manual to find out what connections are available.

You are not going to connect much of anything to that SS.

There are exactly zero video inputs on it.

Can't tell for sure, looks like there are 1 or 2 stereo miniplug inputs on the front of it.
So that SS does not allow for the input of any surround sound audio whatsoever, only stereo.

To connect the ATV, you're going to need:
a Toslink cable (optical cable) from the ATV to
an optical to analog converter - try searching for "optical to RCA" on google - all of these will require a power cable to the converter
then a RCA to stereo mini-plug cable

You will still need to connect the ATV to the TV via HDMI.

Instead of all that, if the TV has an analog audio out (RCA or mini-plug), you may be able to connect direct from the TV to the SS.

Then again, a new receiver might be a cheaper, easier option. You also get the state of the art stuff with it.
