Can I use a time machine drive to store files as well?

I have a time machine drive, a 1tb external hard drive. So far, I've been keeping some installation files that are too big for my hard drive on this drive in a separate directory that I have called "Extras."

Probably best to create a separate partition on your TM drive for your 'Extras'.

I have considered this, but I'm wondering what will happen if I don't. It may be "probably best," but I was hoping to find out what the consequences of my current setup are.

TM backs up into it's own Folder setup, so anything else you put on the drive is safe.
