Are you sure your 27" 2011 iMac has 5 GB of memory? There are 4 memory slots on that machine. Memory is installed in pairs by Apple. 4, 8, 16, or 32 GB. Also, how much hard drive space is free, and which version of OS X are you running?

My mistake - my memory is 4 GB not 5 GB.
I am running Yosemite OS version10.10.1.
Hard drive has 999.35 GB capacity from which 814,98 is free.

OK, thanks for the specs. Yosemite according to Apple can run with 4 GB of memory, however, it's been our experience that it will run much better with 8 GB. Your hard drive space is fine, plenty of room there.

You might want to download the free maintenance and optimization program "OnyX" and run it in auto mode. It's the only one we recommend and can be beneficial to speed things up. Be sure to download the version for Yosemite. After you download it and click to install it, Gatekeeper is going to warn you about opening the program. This is a safe program, so just right click on it and select "install".
