Hello and welcome to the forum! :) However, you provide virtually NO information to help us even suggest a solution to your problem. Before proceeding, please read the first post in Writing Quality Post, and post back to this thread w/ more details on your hardware & software. Dave

Your Mac and its Time Machine are just trying to do what it says, clean up old backups, and it might even have been too full or even corrupt.

A google search would provide multiple hits and suggestions with a search on mac time machine Cleaning up old backups

Just force quit and reboot and turn Off TM until you find a solution.

Or maybe use a better backup app like CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner - my preference) or SD (SuperDuper!) ;)

When you force quit Time Machine run Disk Utility and verify your backup drive. It's possible there are some directory structure issues mucking things up. If it finds errors let it attempt to repair them.

Hopefully the drive hardware itself isn't starting to fail. Disk Utility won't be any help if the drive hardware is failing.
