On Vista and Win 7 there is a app icon to close "all" open windows and show desktop? Is there a Mac function like that? It is very tedious to close every window just to get to desktop...ty

This can vary a bit depending upon the type of Mac and version of OS X you are running and how things are set up. Here's the best way I know to find it on your system:
1. Open System Preferences
2. In the Keyboard Preference pane choose Shortcuts
3. In the list that appears at the left side chaise Mission Control and look for the Show Desktop shortcut. If the box is not checked check it. From now on that shortcut will work without needing to open preferences,

Edit: There are other ways to achieve this using either the trackpad or mouse. See here for an example.

Well, on a trackpad (in my MBPro), the 3-finger gesture from right to left will bring up a clean desktop (simply reverse to return) - Dave :)

I have Hot Corners set up, and this way, you don't have to take your fingers off the trackpad if you need to see your desktop ASAP
