IOS 6 functionality in IOS 8 world?

Hello all!

I am thinking about buying a used IPhone 3GS from a friend. However I am concerned with how fast operating systems are updating these days and the fact that 3GS cannot update past IOS 6. What issues might I have operating IOS 6 in an IOS 8 (or future IOS 9, IOS 10, etc...) centric world?

I have a very old iPod touch that has pretty reduced web/app functionality (even with basic things like gmail and fb) because it's dated enough it can no longer update to current operating systems. I'm worried that if I buy this IOS 6 Iphone I may experience the same limited functionality very soon.

Is it worth it? Should I hold out for a newer iPhone?

Thanks for your thoughts and expertise!

I think you just answered your own question perhaps. ;)

But it should always be good for making and receiving cellphone calls for some time.

If you can live without apps and the increasing chance that you can't view certain websites, it'll be fine. However, I'd recommend against getting a phone this old. In fact, you can buy modern smartphones that are relatively cheap (including some passable Android and Windows Phone ones).

"buying"?

Are you telling me that someone is attempting to charge you money to take an obsolete iPhone 3GS off their hands? Seriously?
