Hi guys. Hoping to find a simple answer to this.
I run a distilling forum and used to be able to add images from a PC to the chat room. Cant seem to find a way to add them now. I used to be able to add them using the BBcodes "IMG" tags. The pics were held on the PC hard drive.
With the iMac (mavericks) I cant seem to do it at all, no matter how I try. I've found the iMac challenging to manage images (being a switcher) but getting there for the most part

I'm hope theres a simple way without using external hosting of images.

As it stands, I can add them to the forum proper, just not to the chat room.

Heres the forum • Index page although youd need to be a member to access the chat room (without hacking in, please dont;))
If you need to see the chat room in order to help, happy to help you help me

Normally the pictures need to be on a server that is reachable from the Internet. Is your iMac set up to allow this? Presumably your PC was.

Personally I use Photobucket to host pictures that I want to post on a forum.

Thanks dbm,
I can post links from a hosing site. The big thing for me is that all the hosting sites have the ability to use the images the way they see fit.
My images are just that, mine. To keep any degree of contol over them , the only way to do that appears to be to host them on your own hard drive. Some people dont agree with the terms and conditions of the host sites, such as photo bucket, flicker, etc.

I know its may be almost a strange concept these days, but I feel I deserve the right to control my images. Regardless of what the makers of the hardware/software feel.
I had this level of control on a PC, holding the images on the/my hard drive.

If I have to give this level of control to a host, be that an Apple sponsored site or another remote host that can change the rules as they see fit, then its all over rover.

The images I'm reffering to are not offensive, pornographic or otherwise, but given the internet is international, there is a degree of sensitivity as to the nature of them.
Although home distilling may be illegal in some countries, its quite legal in others. Geo tagging my images is not on, nor is marking them in some other way.

My PC gave me that level of control, I'm sure my iMac can too, its just how.

I guess this boils down to a question of why I need to give up privacy just to have a slick looking mac computer, V's a pc.

I use DropBox for that purpose. Unless I missed something, DropBox doesn't exert any ownership or privileges over my files.

And it's not the difference between Mac and PC, it's in how the website you want to post to handles images. Apparently on your PC you had it all sorted out, you just need to figure out the same sorting out on the Mac.

Not correct…you're just not visiting the proper sites. Use a website like "photobucket.com". I store/host my photos there…they are 100% mine & private…and I've been using photo bucket for probably going on 7-8 years or more.:)

And there are plenty more sites just like photo bucket.:)

OK, you can do this from iCloud, if you are comfortable with that.

Test pic:

Select the photos you want to share in iPhoto, and share it via iCloud. Make the share a public website. Navigate to the image you want to share via the website link and copy the address of the specific image into the IMG link.

ETA: this worked yesterday, but the image now seems to have disappeared.

The danger, and these days its a big one in hosting your own data is once you make your IP Address public it's public to everyone. there are machines out there that just scan the entire network looking for open ports and probing them for vulnerabilities. By hosting from your own machine these days the onus is on you to really lock things down or risk everything.
Much better to use a web hosting service like Google+ or Flickr or just set up a Blog Page instead using eg Blogger.

Uploaded images to photobucket
Now how do I post the address in the forum site, so people can see the pictures?

In a wonderfully recursive fashion, here is a pic on photo bucket which shows you what you need:
ScreenShot2015-02-20at182019_zps7beb508e.png

After you have uploaded the pic, navigate to it then click on the 'IMG' cell on the right. This will copy the link you need. Paste this into a Post on the forum and it will allow you to reference the image like I have above.

Note that the link actually contains two elements. A URL element and an IMG element. You only need the IMG tags so you can remove the URL tags if you like (I did for the image above). If you leave the URL tags then people can click through to your library. Removing the URL tags doesn't stop them from getting the URL, it just makes it take a little more effort. It's up to you what your preference is.
