"Other" section in iPhone and iPad storage info in iTunes

iMac 27, iPhone 6+, iPad Air 2, Ipad 2
Both my new iPhone 6+ and iPad Air2 show around 6.5 gb in the "other" area of iTunes when synched. (I did restore backups from older units.) I have tried all the usual suggestion for reducing this, although I have about 12 gb free storage/64 gb on both units. Is this 6.4 excessive for "other?" I have tried deleting messages, old mail, turning on and off the switch to auto bring up iTunes when connected, and a few other suggestions seen in other articles. Is there any utility or app that will exactly show where the used gb are? I realize some is in the OS, but is 6.4gb more than usual?
