Conection to a pc on a LAN fails

Your Mac's Specs
iMac 27" 2.7 GHz 12GB Ram Samsung SSD 860 QVO 1TB
I have two computers connected to a router, an iMac running Yosemite and the other running Linux. FTPing from the iMac to the Linux fails as not connecting. Ping from the Linux to the iMac succeeds but fails from the iMac to the Linux box.
Booting WIN 7 in place of Linux and the FTP succeeds.
Any thoughts/suggestions will be appreciated.

what is the firewall set up on the Linux? many of the distributions default with an active firewall service with only port 22 open (ssh)
