I have been given a Macbook Pro that by the looks of it has nothing but windows on it. It does not ask if it can boot to OS X or anything. As I power it on it goes straight to windows. It was given as is just the laptop and its charger.

How can I go about putting OS X back onto it?

Google is no help as all i get it making a USB bootable drive that already has OS X.

The machine should have a recovery partition on it. Take a look here.

Note: if you do a clean install, make sure to back up your content first.

Thanks I will check it out this evening and will let you know.
If there is no recovery partition how would one go about getting an image of a bootable DVD?

OK. Used Command and R and now and it went straight to internet recovery mode.
Thanks for the help and I will let you know how it went.

OK, that was the ORIGINAL version on that machine. Now that it's bootable, what does it say in About This Mac (Click on the Apple logo in the upper left corner of the screen)? What Model MBP is it? With that info, we can figure out what is the latest version of OS X you can run,
