Now some of my students are finding that certain clips in their projects all of a sudden go bad. We get this star on a black frame. I don't remember what the text says but it's something about the clip being lost. If someone can tell me what this means and why it is happening I would greatly appreciate it.

It sounds like the clip has been deleted and all you have is the thumbnail. I get the same message when viewing a Project where the Events are on an external drive, and that drive is not connected.
