Hello,

I am having issues with my macbook pro and in need of some quick help. If there is anyone out there willing to walk with me through some basic steps to figure out whether or not it is a software or hardware issue, your help would be greatly appreciated.

My macbook is a mid 2010 15 inch core i7. I have owned it for nearly five years now, and since that time it gotten increasingly hotter, slower, and more frequently it has started randomly shutting down. The random shutting down has become a lot more over time. It typically would do this maybe every month or two. Now it is doing it every other day or so. When this happens, I am given a panic log which I do not have knowledge to read. This evening it happened again and this was the panic log it gave me.

Is it possibly a ram or driver issue? If so, what might you recommend?

The kernel panic report shows several things which could be troublesome. Let's try something first before going any deeper.

Boot your MacBook Pro in safe boot mode (hold down shift key when restarting) and let it run in safe boot mode for several hours to see if it panics or not. We need to determine if it's hardware related or software that's causing the panics.

The slowdowns and heat you're experiencing could be due to the age of the machine - maybe dust building up inside and the amount of stuff you're running.

Two things are suspect in the panic report: VirtualBox and your graphics hardware. The GPU in your machine is known to be flaky and has been the subject of an Apple recall and extended warranty on certain models.

Let us know by posting back to this same thread.

chscag,

Thank you for the quick reply. I will do as you said and get back to you in regards to what I am experiencing.

One question.....though my warranty has expired, is there anyway apple would still fix my computer due to the possible recall on the GPU?

- Thanks

It depends. Sometimes they're generous and will do the repair gratis even though it may be out of warranty, while other times they won't. The first thing they'll do is check to see if your machine qualifies. Not every 2010 15" model MBP was recalled because of a defective GPU, only certain ones. You would need to take the machine in to an Apple store and let them run their diagnostics on it. The diagnostics is always free when done in an Apple store. Don't take it to an authorized service center as they will charge you to look at it.
