I currently use Airport Express to play music through my sound system from my iPad but I now need Apple TV to hook up with iTunes on my Mac.

Will I have to run both or does Apply TV hook up to the sound system and the TV?

Why is this? What exactly are you trying to do.

The Apple TV can hook up to the stereo and TV. I've got mine that way at the moment. Your TV will need an HDMI input (unless the receiver handles HDMI). Sound can be sent to the stereo via HDMI or an optical connection if the stereo does not accept HDMI.

What model stereo are you using?

I have an old stereo system which does not have HDMI. It only has jack plug connections so I doubt it has Optical connection. I currently run my iPad through Airport Express which is connected to the old Amplifier. I now want to access my computer through my TV and I will need Apple TV for that. I just wondered if I need to keep the Airport Express when I have bought the Apple TV or if the Apple TV will handle both requirements at the same time?

So would that adapt it so that Apple TV would connect as well as the TV?

no, you'd need to connect the ATV to your TV via HDMI. If you're happy with the sound quality from your TV then that's all you'd need.

assuming you'd not be happy with the TV's speakers, then the converter above would allow you to play the audio through your hi-fi while the HDMI would carry the picture (and audio - which you'd then turn down to silent) to your TV
