What is needed to connect an old Roland D5 synth to a 2009 imac?
Can a product be made to do so?

A midi interface. Search for USB to MIDI cables. Something like http://www.dv247.com/cables/esi-midimate-ii-cable-style-usb-2-0-midi-interface--65367
