Since I have updated to OS X Yosemite a dialogue box pops up stating the Java 7 does not run on my operating system. As a result, I have followed through and found out I had to download Java 8. Well, I tried this, and all I see is a whole lot of confusing folders. I don't know how to install it. Any suggestions?
Thank you.

If you download Java 8 from Oracle (here), you should get an installer. What did you download? If you're just looking to run Java applications, you want the JRE.

That's exactly where I downloaded it from. I choose the top Java download button. Perhaps I did it wrong.

Also, my adobe products won't run without a java 6 application. But since java 6 won't run on Yosemite I am sure Java 8 is backwards compatible.

Okay, I just downloaded java from this apple page and it's working fine. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572

Yes, Java 6 works with OS X Yosemite (I also needed it for Flash Builder).

Java 8 may or may not be backwards compatible for what you need. Java 6 is relatively old so it's possible that compatibility was broken along the way.
