No spell checker after Yosemite upgrade

After the recent Yosemite upgrade I noticed that I was no longer prompted by spell check when typing on Chrome. No matter what website I was on my incorrect spellings just sat there. I checked my emails in Mail and found that spelling which usually autocorrects wasn't changing. I checked Safari and spell check was not working there either.

I have checked the setting for Chrome, Safari, Mail and System Preferences, and they all have the correct spell check options selected but spell check is just not working for any programme on the entire computer.

Since the Yosemite upgrade, Word spell checker is not working...while document is located in the cloud? Is there a fix for this?

Do you have any third party apps installed that make changes to Finder or other system items?

3rd party apps

I have pages/numbers keynote installed on my Imac. Not sure if there are any other that may interfere. However, Pages/Numbers and Keynote are not supported yet for Yosemite. Hence, they have not been used for quite some time. I have checked all settings...auto correct capitalization works. but no misspelled words are identified.

Wrong about Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. They have been updated for Yosemite and are fully supported. Actually they were updated the same day Yosemite was released. (Just some info for you.)

Sometimes add on apps that make changes to Finder (TotalFinder, PathFinder, etc) if not updated, can cause problems. If you have none of those or any other add ons, I'm at a loss to understand what could be preventing the built in spell check to work.

Would Keynote/Pages and Numbers cause this issue?

I don't think so, but you never know what interaction Apple apps have with OS X in general. So why don't you update your Pages, Numbers, and Keynote apps to find out? ;)

And let's keep this thread all together. I merged your post about Word and spell checking to this thread. Do not start a new thread.

Can you check my Finder file and see if you detect anything? I would greatly appreciate it, the screenshot .png file of finder window is attached. Thank you for your help.

I don't see anything that could interfere but it may be something that does not show up in the Launchpad app.

But I did notice that you're running Logos 5 and Proclaim. :) I no longer have a need for Proclaim but I still run Logos 5. I've resisted the temptation to upgrade to Logos 6.

Is this a better view? I took both from Finder, just different views. What do you use rather than Proclaim?

Still don't see anything that could cause the problem. I'll keep looking though and if I come up with something, I'll post back to this same thread.

As for Proclaim, we no longer have a need for Worship software since all of our ministry work is done now as outreach. I've retired from active pastoring in a church environment and volunteer at several nursing homes doing Bible studies and conducting Sunday services for them. My only assistant is my wife. :)

Solution for Spell Check

Method 1: Set Document Language
To set Document Language, follow these steps:

Open a document in Word for Mac.
On the Edit menu, click Select All.
On the Tools menu, click Language.
Select the language dictionary you want the speller to use, such as English (US).
Uncheck Do not check spelling or grammar, and then click OK.

If the problem continues to occur, go to the next method.

Method 2: Set the language for the default Normal.dotm template
To set the Normal.dotm template language settings, follow these steps:

Open a blank document in Word for Mac.
On the Edit menu, click Select All.
On the Tools menu, click Language.
Select the language dictionary you want the speller to use, such as English (US).
Uncheck Do not check spelling or grammar, and then click Default.
Click Yes to accept changes that will affect all new documents based on the NORMAL template.
Click OK.

If the problem continues to occur, go to the next method.

Method 3: Check the Spelling and Grammar preferences
To check the spelling and grammar preferences, follow these steps:

Open Word for Mac.
On the Word menu, click Preferences.
Under Authoring and Proofing Tools, click Spelling and Grammar.
The following options should be selected (checked):
Check spelling as you type
Check grammar as you type
The following options should not be selected (unchecked):
Hide spelling errors in this document
Hide grammatical errors in this document
Click OK.

If the problem continues to occur, go to the next method.

Method 4: Check the Input Sources language settings
To check the Input Sources language settings, follow these steps:

Quit all Office applications.
On the Apple menu, click System Preferences.
Under Personal, click Language & Text.
Click Input Sources.
Set the Input Sources language to the desired language Word should use.
Restart the Mac.

If the problem continues to occur, go to the next method.

Method 5: Move the Normal.dotm template
Important If Normal.dotm is renamed, damaged, or moved, Word automatically creates a new version the next time you start Word. The new version will not include any of the customizations that you made to the version that you renamed or moved.

To move the Normal.dotm template, follow these steps:

Quit all Office applications.
On the Go menu, click Home.
Open Library.
Note The Library folder is hidden in Mac OS X Lion. To display this folder, hold down the OPTION key while you click the Go menu.

Open Application Support, and then Microsoft.
Open Office, and then User Templates.
Drag normal.dotm to the desktop.
Restart the Mac.

If the problem is resolved, you can drag the normal.dotm file from the desktop to the Trash.

If the problem continues to occur, go to the next method.

Method 6: Remove Word preferences
To remove Word preferences, follow these steps:

Quit all Office applications.
On the Go menu, click Home.
Open Library.
Note The Library folder is hidden in Mac OS X Lion. To display this folder, hold down the OPTION key while you click the Go menu.

Open Preferences.
Drag com.microsoft.word.plist and the Microsoft folder to the desktop.
Restart the Mac.

Seems to work all right on my MBP. Was on various website forums and it worked fine.
