Trying to hook up a MacBook Air to an external monitor

I have a Mid-2013 13" MacBook Air and I recently purchased an Acer LCD Monitor (G276HL) and this has a 1920 x 1080 display.

What I am trying to do is basically have a bigger space to work in.

If I mirror the displays, both monitors shift to 1440 x 900.

If I change the arrangement so they don't mirror, I have a 1920 x 1080 external monitor on the left with my MacBook Air's 1440 x 900 sitting on the right.

I want to be able to use only the external monitor when I am at my desk, rather than deal with the confusion of having two monitors, especially when I shift between desktops.

Is this even possible to do? Thanks for any help.
