Yesssss.....!

Hello,

I had a similar problem as GraceGuitars: thunderbolt-to-HDMI cable from my mid-2011 iMac 12.1 (A1311) did not detect my Samsung external monitor. Combination worked with my MacBook Air and another, more recent iMac.

The solution - discovered this morning after trying everything yesterday : push the Thunderbolt plug fully into the computer port. I know, it's the first advice on the list, but the port on the older iMac was 'sticky' and I had to apply more pressure. Maybe the first T-bolt ports were not as good as later ones? Or I just got one that was slightly off-spec?

Anyway, a relief.

THIS actually worked for me!! Was struggling with this exactly 2 years ago, in the end I gave up.
Wanted to connect MacbookPro 13 Retina 2015 to iMac 27 2011 via a new thunderbolt cable for 2nd screen, but no connection.
By googling the issue again after I bought a thunderbolt 2 dock this week for the MacBook Pro and trying the target display function on iMac again, I read this.
Pushed it good ... ... and indeed!! heard some 'click' and the problem was solved, I could not believe it! after 2 years

Wish that worked for me. All I get when I put more pressure on it is marks on my thumb and index finger from pushing so hard...no "click" or anything else.
