iMessages offline alerts

apples discussions page seems to not exist anymore so here I am. So I'm new to imessages, currently using it on my iPhone 4S (ios 7) with my macbook pro 10.9.4. The problem is on my macbook. I understand receiving a notification of a new message when I have the application open, but once I close the app I still receive notifications on my laptop. The phone is enough at this point and I don't need multiple dings going off. Any work around? Thanks in advance.

annnnd, I found that you can turn alerts off by deselecting "Use alerts for this conversation" under the "View" tab on the desktop app.

Disabling some notifications on one's Mac can be a PITA AFAIC and can also be a hit & miss thing.
